Board Members

The District Chair is Kalen Jones who also represents the Moab City Council. His current term of office is through December 31, 2019.  His email contact address is kjones@moabcity.org.

The District Vice Chair is Kevin Fitzgerald who is one of the At-Large members.  He was reappointed to the Board in January 2017 and will be serving to December 31, 2020.  His email contact address is kevinfitzmoab@gmail.com.

The District Treasurer is Mary McGann who also represents the Grand County Council.  Her current term of office is through December 31, 2022.  Her email contact address is mmcgann@grandcountyutah.net.

Stephanie Hamborsky was appointed by the Town of Castle Valley as the Castle Valley representative and began serving on the Solid Waste District Board on July 11, 2019. Her predecessor, Pamala Hackley, stepped down as the Castle Valley representative in June 2018 after serving on the Board for over thirteen years.  Stephanie is also a Board member of the Resiliency Hub. Chad Harris is the newest At-Large member and joined the Board in March 2019.  His email address is charris@swssd1.org.

Staff

District Manager:  Evan Tyrrell joined the District in January 2019 and is dedicated to continuous improvements while facilitating a new era for the District. Evan comes to the District with a wide variety of experience in waste management and natural resource conservation. Prior to relocating to the Colorado Plateau in 2015, Evan worked with two solid waste management districts in his home state of Indiana. Since then, Evan has worked in environmental consulting and remediation, served as a Citizen’s Advisory Committee member for the New Mexico Gold King Mine Spill Long-Term Impact Review Team, and most recently supported the protection of human health and the environment at uranium mill tailings disposal sites as a contractor to the U.S. Department of Energy. Evan obtained Masters degrees in Environmental Science and Public Affairs from the Indiana University School of Public and Environmental Affairs (SPEA), is a Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), and has training in Safety and Health, First Aid, and Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER). Facilities Supervisor:  Chris Scovill joined the District in November 2018 bringing his extensive knowledge and experience in construction management.  Chris can be reached on his District cellular phone at (435) 260-6121 and via email at cscovill@swssd1.org.

Administrative Assistant:  Annette Myers joined the District in August 2017 bringing with her extensive knowledge in files management, accounting, policy overview, and human resources.  She is also the Records Control Officer and is in charge of all GRAMA requests.  Annette can be reached at (435) 259-3867 and via email at amyers@swssd1.org.

District Clerk:  Robin Dahm is under contract to perform duties as the District Clerk through December 2019, and assists with financial reconciliations, meeting minutes, and other administrative tasks.  She has decades of experience as a technical writer and editor, and is a reporter for the Moab Sun News.  Robin is also the District Clerk for the Grand Conservation District and is a volunteer for the Moab American Red Cross Disaster Services.

Equipment Operators

Adam Watkins is the most senior equipment operator at the District.  He has attended the Landfill Management Certification Class and passed his certification exam for technician level in August 2017. Adam operates at all three of the District’s facilities and provides training to new operators.

Brandon Bertwell is the recycle center equipment operator.  He began working at the center as a volunteer when he was fifteen years old when it was operated by the Canyonlands Community Recycling.  He is now an employee of the District working predominantly in the recycle center and periodically assists in equipment operations at the two landfills.

Keith Rosewaren joined the Solid Waste District in August 2018 having come from the oil industry in Oklahoma.  He began working in the recycling center and quickly showed his hard work ethic and abilities at the Moab and Klondike Landfills.

Kenny Key began working on a part time basis in July 2018 to assist with the Recycle Center and Moab Landfill operations.

Equipment Operator/Shop:  Herman Herrera joined the District in December 2018 and is a master of many trades. Husband, father, grandfather, and “lover of life,” Herman comes from the quiet hollows of the New Mexico Rio Grand Valley and has been in Southeastern Utah since 2003. Herman is also a volunteer at KZMU and DJs a weekly show on Sundays from 3pm-5pm entitled Entre Las Piedras (“Between the Stones”).

The District currently has two open positions:  Master Mechanic and PT Office Clerk.

Others

The District employs seasonal laborers to help pick up litter as needed, especially at the Klondike Landfill.  In addition, individuals completing community service hours work with the District, predominantly at the Community Recycle Center.
