  • Acids & Bases: Can be disposed of through our Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection Program at the Canyonlands Transfer Station (2295 Hwy 191) for a fee. Open to Grand and San Juan County, Utah residents only. Must be properly labeled and free of leaks.
  • Air Conditioning & Refrigeration Units: Canyonlands Transfer Station for $30 per unit. Freon is removed b a certified contractor.
  • Aluminum (All Forms):
    • Aluminum Cans: Community Recycle Center (1000 Sand Flats Road), Canyonlands Transfer Station single-stream recycling container, and curbside single-stream recycling collection.
    • Aluminum trays, foil, pie plates, etc.: Dispose in trash cart (Not Recyclable).
    • Aluminum sheeting/siding: Either the Canyonlands Transfer Station (2295 Hwy 191) in the free scrap metal pile or the Moab Landfill (1282 Sand Flats Road) for construction & demolition debris disposal (fees apply).
  • Antifreeze: Canyonlands Transfer Station: $5.00 minimum disposal fee. Must be delivered in a sealed, labeled container and free from other liquids and solids.
  • Animal Carcasses: Canyonlands Transfer Station: Pricing based on carcass size. Max at $75/each. Carcass must be free of disease.
  • Appliances: Canyonlands Transfer Station and Moab Landfill. Refrigerators and A/C units are only at accepted at the Canyonlands Transfer Station.
  • Asbestos: Asbestos (non-friable) is only accepted at the Klondike Landfill (KLF) as a Special Waste. KLF is for franchised haulers only and is not open to the public. Friable asbestos are prohibited. For more information on asbestos, visit https://swssd1.org/special-wastes
  • Batteries (Lead-acid): Community Recycle Center: Automotive only. $6.00 per unit. Do not place in curbside trash or single-stream recycling cart.
  • Batteries (Disposable & Rechargeable): Community Recycle Center: $5.00 minimum recycling fee. Weight per pound. Do not place in curbside trash or single-stream recycling cart. CAUTION: Lithium-ion batteries are extremely flammable when punctured and can cause fires!
  • Bubble Wrap, Packing Peanuts, and other shipping materials: Place in trash.
  • Cardboard: Accepted at Community Recycle Center and Canyonlands Transfer Station (fees may apply). May be placed in single-stream recycling container. Must be free of food, liquids, and other debris. Cardboard is prohibited at the Moab Landfill. Can be placed in single-stream recycling cart.
  • Cars: We do not accept cars. Contact a local towing company or junkyard for more information. Camper tops can be accepted on a case-by case basis. Metal cars parts can be accepted at the Canyonlands Transfer Station if free of all automotive liquids.
  • Cell Phones, Tablets, and other Electronics: Community Recycle Center and Canyonlands Transfer Station (fees apply). Do not place in curbside trash or single-stream recycling cart – high risk of fire. No appliances or items containing refrigerants/freon or radioactive materials (e.g. air conditioners, refrigerators, smokes detectors, etc.) will be accepted.
  • Christmas Trees & Associated Items: Live Christmas trees are accepted during the “Christmas Tree Reclamation Program” from December to February. Artificial trees must go in the trash as well as decorations, tinsel, tree stands, lights, etc. if unable to donate these items.
  • Concrete: Moab Landfill (fees apply). Prohibited from placing concrete in roll-off containers and at the Canyonlands Transfer Station.
  • Cups/Dishes: All cups and lids (paper, plastic, and Styrofoam) should be placed in trash. Please donate ceramic and glass cups and dishes if possible.
  • Dirt: Can be accepted for free at the Moab Landfill if free of organic materials and other debris. Otherwise fees will apply. Do not place in curbside trash cart. Prohibited (along with rocks, gravel, and sand) at the Canyonlands Transfer Station.
  • Drywall: Moab Landfill and Canyonlands Transfer Station (fees apply).
  • Electronics: Community Recycle Center and Canyonlands Transfer Station (fees apply). Do not place in curbside trash or single-stream recycling cart – high risk of fire. No appliances or items containing refrigerants/freon or radioactive materials (e.g. air conditioners, refrigerators, smokes detectors, etc.) will be accepted – prohibited at the Moab Landfill.
  • Fire Extinguishers: Canyonlands Transfer Station as part of the HHW Collection Program (fees apply). Commercial entities can contact StateFire (South Salt Lake) for more information.
  • Flammable Liquids & Solids: Canyonlands Transfer Station – HHW Program (fees apply). Examples include old gasoline/diesel fuel, kerosene, lighter fluid, automotive fluids, household cleaners, adhesives, epoxies, etc. No containers over 5 gallons will be accepted – no commercial HHW.
  • Flooring: Flooring, typically in the form of carpets and underpadding, is commonly accepted at the Moab Landfill and Canyonlands Transfer Station (fees apply). However, demolition events (in which flooring such as linoleum may be included) are required to be tested for asbestos.
  • Fluorescent/Light Bulbs: Community Recycle Center (fees apply).
  • Food Scraps: CSWA does not currently operate a food waste compost program – place in trash. However, we do encourage employing food waste minimization practices or utilizing composting, where possible.
  • Furniture: Canyonlands Transfer Station (fees apply). Donate when possible.
  • Gas & Gas Cans: Canyonlands Transfer Station (fees apply) via the HHW Collection Program. Please note: you will not receive the gas can back. We currently do not have the capability to remove gas from a gas can.
  • Glass (All Forms):
    • Glass Bottles: Community Recycle Center. Glass is prohibited in single-stream recycling carts. CSWA is currently exploring more options for glass recycling drop-offs.
    • Glass (Windows): Canyonlands Transfer Station and Moab Landfill (fees apply).
    • Glass (Other varieties): Canyonlands Transfer Station (fees apply) or trash.
  • Green/Yard Waste: Moab Landfill and Canyonlands Transfer Station (fees apply). Inorganic materials will be charged construction & demolition rates. Root balls will be charged concrete & asphalt rates. Composting of clean green/yard waste in encouraged by CSWA.
  • Hangers: Place in trash if broken. Donate when possible.
  • Lawn Mower: Canyonlands Transfer Station: All fluids must be removed/drained prior to disposal.
  • Lumber: Moab Landfill and Canyonlands Transfer Station (fees apply).
  • Mattresses: Canyonlands Transfer Station – $15 per unit. Prohibited at the Moab Landfill. Bulk mattress loads accepted at the Klondike Landfill for franchised haulers only.
  • Mercury-containing Devices: Community Recycle Center – $6 per unit.
  • Metal (Scrap): Moab Landfill (fees apply for commercial disposal) and Canyonlands Transfer Station. Please note: Scrap metal can be disposed of for free at the Transfer Station if free of debris, liquids, and other materials.
  • Microwave: Canyonlands Transfer Station and Community Recycle Center (fees apply).
  • Municipal Solid Waste (aka Trash): Canyonlands Transfer Station and curbside trash cart. Prohibited at the Moab Landfill – loads containing trash will be rejected.
  • Oil (under the UOCC Program): Canyonlands Transfer Station: Engine oil, transmission fluid, compressor oils, hydraulic oil, brake fluid, and oils used as buoyant and lubricating grease. This program is free to residential users. Large quantities are not allowed – contact the UDEQ for disposal sites.
  • Paint and Paint-Related Products:
    • Water-based paints (enamel, latex, acrylic): Dry out to a cottage-cheese like consistency and can be placed in the trash.
    • Oil-based paints, stains, paint thinners, and other volatile/highly flammable paint-related products are considered HHW and should be disposed of at the Canyonlands Transfer Station (fees apply). For more information, visit our HHW webpage
  • Paper: Canyonlands Transfer Station, Community Recycle Center, and curbside single-stream recycling cart.
  • Pallets: Canyonlands Transfer Station or Moab Landfill. Pallets can be dropped off for free at the Transfer Station if in reusable condition.
  • Plastics:
    • Community Recycle Center: #1, #2 (natural and colored), and #5 plastics. Three (3) single-stream containers are also located at the CRC.
    • Canyonlands Transfer Station and curbside single-stream recycling cart: All plastics excluding #6. Large plastic pieces are not accepted.
  • Pizza Boxes:
    • Greasy with Food Residue: Place in trash.
    • Empty with No Food Residue/Grease: Recycle.
    • Remember: Pizza boxes can be recycled if they are not greasy or contaminated with food waste. For example, the top half can be recycled while the bottom half is thrown away.
  • Poison/Toxic Liquids: Canyonlands Transfer Station as part of the HHW Collection Program (fees apply). Examples include pesticides, fertilizers, insecticides, stump killers, etc.
  • Propane: Canyonlands Transfer Station as part of the HHW Collection Program (fees apply). Small camping propane canisters are accepted at the Community Recycle Center.
  • Railroad Ties:
    • No creosote present: Moab Landfill
    • Creosote present (small quantity): Canyonlands Transfer Station (exceptions apply)
    • Creosote present (large quantities): Klondike Landfill (at CSWA’s discretion)
  • Smoke Detector: Prohibited at all facilities. Smoke detectors contain radioactive materials and must be disposed of at an appropriate facility.
  • Tires: Moab Landfill and Canyonlands Transfer Station. A 1.5 times the applicable per unit fee is assessed for tires with rims.
