After many discussions and comparisons, Canyonlands Solid waste Authority (CSWA) has officially selected and purchased a composting unit! Allow us to introduce the Eco Drum 740 Composter. The Eco Drum unit is a versatile, in-vessel composting system that uses forced

aeration and mechanical agitation to create and control the perfect conditions for rapid low-odor composting. This unit was selected for its cost effectiveness, corrosion-free construction, ease of operational use, expandability options, and low energy requirements. The Tech Spec for the 740 Unit can be read here.

The cost of this unit (including freight) plus compost curing boxes, Bio-filter, and a 55-gallon tote lift was $74,598.00. The unit is currently in delayed production as CSWA begins consultations with local contractors to develop and install a concrete pad and electrical unit to house and power the composter. A separate screening and bagging system will be purchased at a later date once the formula has been finalized and composting sampling (to be provided by the USU Extension office) indicates that the compost is ready for distribution.

Our next steps will be to determine our first commercial generator, educational outreach and public engagement, and research potential locations for community food waste drop-off bins. While the bulk of our volumes will be from the commercial entity, community buy-in is vital for the success of the pilot program. We will continue to periodically update the community on the status of this brand new program and can’t wait to bring public composting opportunities to the City of Moab and beyond!
