Commercial composting looms on the horizon for Canyonlands Solid Waste Authority with the newest production update! EcoDrum representatives have informed us that our unit is ready for shipment and should be arriving at the Moab Landfill NEXT WEEK! Despite being several months behind due to changes within the federal government, we are confident the pilot program will be a resounding success. But that’s not all! Canyonlands Solid Waste Authority (CSWA) is now a proud member of the US Composting Council – an organization working to advance compost manufacturing, utilization, and organics recycling. While these updates are exciting, we’ve got even more updates to give you:
- Two (2) CSWA employees will be attending a 5-day certified compost operations training course in November (Ft. Collins, Colorado) where they will spend a week learning the ins and outs of properly managing compost operations along with technical knowledge of compost building and testing; and
- Moab City will be reaching out to identify food waste rescue opportunities with local food waste generators.
CSWA hopes the success of this pilot compost program will result in measurable food waste volume reduction, increased soil health and stability through the application of compost to poor quality soils, and even pave the way to a curbside or satellite food waste/organics collection system not currently available in rural southeastern Utah. Sustainable waste management is invaluable to the health and safety of our local community and CSWA continues its commitment to that mission not only through curbside trash and recycling services but through programs like this. Please continue to follow our Compost Chronicles for more updates, exciting announcements, and invitations to special events. Until next time!
